Luyckx integrates PistenBully and machine control systems on Jan De Nul’s Sunfish cable trencher

Monday, April 27, 2026

For the Sunfish, Jan De Nul’s new intertidal cable trencher, Luyckx handled the full integration of a PistenBully and the in-house development of the machine control system. The cab accommodates two operators and enables the complex controls required for the safe burial of HVDC cables up to 3.2 metres below the seabed.

The Sunfish is equipped with:

  • Large touchscreens and multiple bus systems
  • Advanced hydraulic functions
  • A 20-foot container on top for 930 hp jet pumps

All mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems were integrated, tested and perfectly coordinated by Luyckx, ensuring the Sunfish is ready for intensive offshore use.

Thanks to this collaboration with De Meyer NV, the Sunfish can lay two HVDC cables simultaneously and pull a fibre-optic cable.

The vessel will be deployed in the German Wadden Sea this summer.
